The challenge of providing broadband access to rural and remote communities can feel as daunting as scaling a craggy Rocky Mountain peak.  That’s because we’re dealing with both the second largest landmass in the world and a country with the lowest population density of all the G8 countries. We have also evolved a system whereby all of the major telcos have built their own inter-community networks, which is kind of like having Canada Post, FedEx and Loomis each building their own TransCanada highway. Applying the foundational principles of the research and education networking community, cooperation and collaboration, to this issue can open up a wider range of possibilities for enabling broadband access to all Canadians. Jim will discuss the opportunities for Canada to leverage existing infrastructures and enable healthy competition among telcos and enable improved broadband connectivity to our remote and rural citizens.
